The Best Way to Learn How to Ride a Motorcycle With Either a Manual or Automatic Transmission

Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience, but for beginners, learning the ropes — especially when it comes to manual vs. automatic transmissions — can be challenging. Understanding the differences between the two and the best learning strategies for each can help new riders build confidence and master their skills efficiently.

Learning to Ride a Manual Transmission Motorcycle

A manual motorcycle requires the rider to control the clutch and shift gears manually. While it can be intimidating at first, mastering a manual transmission gives riders better control and a deeper connection with their bike. The motorcycle can be slowed down without even touching the brakes.

Step-by-Step Approach:

  1. Understand the Controls – Familiarize yourself with the clutch lever (left handlebar), the gear shifter (left foot pedal), the throttle (right handlebar), and the brake levers. New riders, and those who are inexperienced riding a manual shift bike, often mistake the levers and pedals while moving, which can be very dangerous.
  2. Practice in a Safe Environment – Start by practicing in an open parking lot or a motorcycle training course area.
  3. Start with Clutch Control – Learn to pull in the clutch, ease off slowly, and feel the bike’s “friction zone” before adding throttle. Stalling the motorcycle is fine at first when trying to get a feel for the friction zone. Don’t be scared to stall the motorcycle when practicing.
  4. Shift Gears Gradually – Begin with first gear, shift smoothly by pulling in the clutch, shifting up with your left foot, then releasing the clutch while adding throttle.
  5. Practice Stopping and Starting – Balance smooth braking and clutch control to avoid stalling. You’ll realize the motorcycle will balance more easily once you are moving.
  6. Take a Motorcycle Safety Course – A professional course will provide structured training and expert guidance to build confidence and skill (we always recommend this class).

Learning to Ride an Automatic Transmission Motorcycle

An automatic motorcycle eliminates the need for a clutch and gear shifting, making it a more accessible option for new riders. In the past, finding automatic transmission motorcycles would have been difficult, but now almost every major brand offers some sort of CVT or automatic transmission option.

Step-by-Step Approach:

  1. Familiarize Yourself with the Controls – Since there’s no clutch or gear shifter, focus on the throttle, brakes, and balance. Make sure your feet can reach the road. When you start to take off and come to a stop, you will learn to feel when to let go of the road.
  2. Start with Slow Acceleration – Use gentle throttle inputs to get a feel for power delivery.
  3. Practice Braking and Maneuvering – Since there’s no need to shift gears, concentrate on smooth braking and cornering. You’ll need to get comfortable with holding the bike upright with your feet until it starts to move.
  4. Ride in Various Conditions – Once you feel confident, start practicing in various environments, such as city streets and highways, to gain riding experience.
  5. Take a Safety Course – Even for automatic riders, structured training is invaluable for learning proper road awareness and defensive riding techniques.

Manual vs. Automatic: Which Should You Learn?

  • Manual Transmission: Best for riders looking for full control, traditional motorcycle feel, and versatility across various bike types.
  • Automatic Transmission: Ideal for beginners who want an easier learning curve and a more relaxed riding experience.

Regardless of the type of motorcycle, the best approach to learning is to start slow, practice in a safe environment, and consider taking a certified motorcycle safety course. By building skills gradually and focusing on safety, new riders can gain confidence and enjoy the freedom of the open road.
