New Jersey Motorcycle Registration

1. Insurance Requirements:

Before registering your motorcycle, you must obtain the mandatory insurance coverage as required by New Jersey law. The minimum coverage limits in New Jersey are:

• $15,000 for bodily injury per person.
• $30,000 for bodily injury per accident.
• $5,000 for property damage per accident.

You will need your insurance information in order to register the motorcycle at the time of registration. Get a motorcycle insurance quote. 

2. Necessary Documentation:

Gather and prepare the following documents for registration:

• Proof of Identity: Satisfy the 6 Points of ID verification by providing documents such as a birth certificate, U.S. passport, or New Jersey driver’s license.
• Proof of Insurance: A valid New Jersey Insurance Identification Card.
• Proof of Ownership: The motorcycle’s title. If the motorcycle is from a non-titled state, a notarized bill of sale with vehicle description and sale price is required.
• Completed Forms:
  • Universal Title Application (Form OS/SS-UTA).
  • Vehicle Registration Application (Form BA-49).

3. Fees and Taxes:

Be prepared to pay the following fees (check with the NJ MVC to verify current fees):

• Registration Fee: $65 annually.
• Sales Tax: New Jersey sales tax applies to vehicle purchases; consult the MVC or the New Jersey Division of Taxation for current rates.

The NJ MVC accepts various payment methods. Please check with the MVC for acceptable payment types.

4. Registration Process:

Follow these steps to register your motorcycle:

• Visit an NJ MVC Agency: Bring all required documents and fees to a New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) agency.
• Submit Documents: Present your completed forms, proof of ownership, identification, and insurance.
• Pay Fees: Be prepared to pay all applicable fees, including title, registration, and sales tax.
• Receive Registration and Plates: Upon approval, you’ll receive your registration certificate and motorcycle plates.
