Ohio Motorcycle Registration

If you’ve recently purchased a motorcycle or moved to Ohio, registering it with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is essential.

Step 1: Documents for Ohio Motorcycle Registration

Before you visit the BMV, gather the following documents:

• Proof of Ownership: If you bought your motorcycle from a dealer, you’ll have a title; private sellers must sign over the title to you. Out-of-state titles must be converted to Ohio titles through a title transfer process.
• Ohio Motorcycle Insurance: Ohio requires motorcycle owners to carry liability insurance. Make sure your policy meets state minimum coverage.
• Ohio Driver’s License with Motorcycle Endorsement: A valid Ohio driver’s license is required to register a motorcycle, along with a Class M endorsement if you’ll be riding the motorcycle.
• Completed Out-of-State Inspection Form (if applicable): If your motorcycle was previously titled outside Ohio, you’ll need a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection. This can be done at a BMV location or at many Ohio deputy registrar offices.

Having these documents ready before you go will speed up the registration process.

Step 2: Complete a VIN Inspection for Out-of-State Motorcycles

For motorcycles brought in from another state, a VIN inspection is necessary before registration. This inspection verifies that your motorcycle’s VIN matches the records on file. You can complete the inspection at a licensed BMV inspection location or at an authorized deputy registrar’s office.

Step 3: Visit Ohio BMV 

First-time motorcycle registration must be done in person at a BMV office and can’t be done online. You can find your nearest Ohio BMV branch using the BMV location finder.

Step 4: Complete the Ohio Title and Registration Application

When you arrive at the BMV, you’ll need to fill out an Application for Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle. This form will ask for details about the motorcycle, such as the make, model, year, and VIN, as well as your personal information. Completing this form accurately is important to avoid any issues with the registration process.

Step 5: Pay the Motorcycle Registration Fees in Ohio

Ohio motorcycle registration fees are straightforward but can vary based on a few factors, such as the county of registration. Here’s an overview of the costs (subject to change, check with the BMV for current fees):

• Title Fee: $15.00 (plus additional fees if transferring from out-of-state)
• Registration Fee: $25.00 for motorcycles
• County-Specific Fees: Additional fees of up to $5 may apply based on the county of registration
• License Plate Fee: $11.00

Some offices allow specific payment methods so bring cash, credit card, or a check.

Step 6: License Plate and Registration Sticker

Once your application and payment are processed, the BMV will issue a license plate and registration sticker for your motorcycle. The registration sticker should be attached to the rear license plate, making it clearly visible according to Ohio law. With your plate and sticker, you’re now fully registered to ride in Ohio.
